Recently a friend of mine asked me to create two pairs of crochet baby mitts to match two baby booties I’d already made her, turning them into a complete set.
Not difficult, right? WRONG! 😕 I went through several designs that I just hated. Also, every free pattern I stumbled across used baby weight yarn. It’s easy to adjust a pattern for yarn weight but for some reason mine were coming out too wide–too narrow–and everything in between!
Since I needed to make the mitts match, and the yarn I used in each bootie was light worsted, I decided to throw out all the patterns I’d accumulated and fool with off the cuff designs that would highlight the yarn without getting so large that they wouldn’t fit an infant.
This is what popped off my hook!
Since I had such a hard time with these, I’m thinking a few other people are struggling with them as well! So, without further ado, let’s get to the pattern!

Infant Scratch Mitts:
Materials Needed:
- Size D crochet hook
- Light worsted weight yarn in any color (I used Caron Simply Soft in pink and Red Heart Shimmer in purple)
Gauge:
- 6 sc rows=1 inch; 5 sc=1 inch
Size:
- These are sized to fit a newborn up to approximately 3 months. For older babies, size your hook up.
Infant Scratch Mitts:
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 8 sc in 1st ch, join with a sl st to the 1st sc (8 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st to the 1st sc (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc around, join with a sl st to the 1st sc (16 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in next, (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next) around, join with a sl st to the 1st sc (24 sc)
Rnds 5-16: Ch 1, sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc around, join in the top of the 1st sc (24 sc)
Rnd 17: sl st into the next sc, ch 2 (counts as bpdc), (fpdc next, bpdc next) around, join in the top of the ch 2 (12 fpdc, 12 bpdc)
Rnd 18: Ch 1 (counts as bpsc), (fpsc next, bpsc next) around, join in the top of the ch 1 (12 fpsc, 12 bpsc)
Finish off and weave in all tails.

Love this pattern. I have been looking for an easy one. I make hats, booties and blankets for people in need and now they will get scratch mitts as well. Thank you so much for this.

This is a wonderful pattern. Just finished a pair. I too was having problems finding a good mitten pattern and even bought a few patterns. This pattern is perfect.

These are wonderful. I’m crocheting things for mothers who have nothing for their babies when they’re coming home and am searching for patterns for sweater sets as well. Have found a few that are suitable. Thank you for the mitten pattern. I’ve been making things for grandkids for many years. Thanks again.

I am very new at this and i tried to just print the page with the instructions but couldn’t get that page and the print is so light . Is that because i am not supposed to print it , if not i didn’t realize it . I will write it all down instead. They look like i could start with this pattern . Thanks

Thank you . I just have to say i am a newbie and most of my booties and mittens don’t always come out the same size , just a little off but you can tell . 😦 I take it apart and do it over , guess it is my tension ? Thanks again . These are so cute and i will master it 😉
