Springtime Ruffle Brim Hat

It’s that time of year! The weather is turning warmer and crochet styles are beginning to see a dramatic shift from heavy and textured to light and lacy.

One of my favorite types of things to crochet for springtime weather are hats. With a few simple stitches, there isn’t any end to the types of cute and functional designs you can throw together!

This is my twist on taking double crochet and changing it up to suit the spring temps.

Springtime Ruffle Brim Hat

Materials Needed:

• Size H or I hook (If you want this to be a little more roomy, go with an I hook),
• Red Heart Super Saver 4 ply yarn in two or three complimentary colors.

Note: The above hat was crocheted using one strand of baby sport weight yarn and one strand of Red Heart Shimmer–both in white. The completed project measures exactly the same for both yarn methods (single 4 ply yarn and double strand: baby weight with shimmer) however the double strand hat is slightly heavier.

Completed hat circumference measures approximately 20 inches and will stretch an approximate 22 inches. 

Completed hat height measures approximately 7 inches from tip of hat to base of sc brim (does not include ruffle).

Stitches used:

• ch=chain
• sc=single crochet
• dc=double crochet
• sl st=slip stitch

Using main color, ch 4, sl st in beginning ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (From here throughout pattern, this ch 3 counts as a stitch), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, join with 1 sc in the top of the beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space as join, ch 1, 3 dc in same space as join, ch 1, *[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch 1 sp, rep from * in each ch 1 sp around. For last increase: 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, join with 1 sc in the top of the beginning ch 3.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space as join, ch 1, 3 dc in same space as join, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, *[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch 1 sp, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, rep from * in each ch 1 sp around. For last ch 1 space: 3 dc, join with 1 sc in the top of the beginning ch 3.

Rnds 4 – 11: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space as join, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, rep from * in each ch 1 sp around. For last ch 1 space: 3 dc, join with 1 sc in the top of the beginning ch 3.

Rnd 12 – 15: Change color to work the brim portion. Sc in each st around (make sure you include 1 sc in each of those ch 1 sts from the last round).

Rnd 16: Change colors to a third optional shade for the bottom of the brim. This color change is OPTIONAL.You can continue this round in the previous color if you’d like. Sc in each st around.

Rnd 17: Change color to your main hat color. Ch 2, 1 dc in same stitch as ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around, join in the top of the ch 2.

Rnd 18: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st as ch 2, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, rep from * around, join in the top of the ch 2.

Rnd 19: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st as ch 2, *1 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, rep from * around, join in the top of the ch 2.

Rnd 20: Change color to brim color. Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, join in the top of the ch 1, finish off and weave in tails.
