The Boob Hat has been making the rounds–blazing a trail all through fb and pinterest. So naturally, I’ve been asked several times to tackle it–and I have. I present you with my version of The Boob Hat!
The pattern is pretty straight forward. You need some skin toned yarn and–well, nipple colored yarn…. Those of us with breasts already know that these shades can range through lots of tones, so really any combo will work.
I’ve used for the main part of the hat an eggshell color and for the nipple, baby pink.
Onward to the pattern!

I like the original pattern better – do you still have a copy of that?

This is the same pattern. The only thing that was updated was the pdf download that you can now get over in Craftsy.

I literally just came back this morning to finish the last few rounds, and the pattern is totally different. Will the ravelry pattern be what it was with g hook and 11 rounds for the newborn hat?

It’s the exact same pattern, just reworked to add a gauge for a larger hook 🙂 You’re pattern shouldn’t be any different!

OK…I understand that in theory it shouldn’t matter that the hook size changed with the pattern. However, I’m trying to make this again for another friend, and it is not turning out at all like the one I made with the G hook. I had to wing it to finish the first one without the original pattern. Is there any way that you still have the pattern worked with the G hook?

Marissa,
How may I print this up without all the photos and comments? The yarn is purchased and I’m ready to make it.

What would I do to make this for an adult?

I would simply add in more increase rounds to make the diameter larger.

Just made this and it turned out perfectly! You gave great instructions and were easy to follow for a newby crocheter like myself. Thank you so much!

Hi, I can’t seem to get the nipple bulge shape at the top, how did you do it?

Hey Lauren!
Sorry to hear you’re struggling with the most important part of this hat!! Since I can’t see what you’re doing to know where it’s going pear-shaped, I’m going to assume that it’s either your tension or your hook size that’s tripping you up. If your tension is too loose, the nipple part won’t hold its shape and will spread out on you. It will be the same if your hook is too large. It just won’t look the way mine does.
I would try to work that first part of the pattern–just the nipple section–with a smaller hook first. If that works and you see a nipple, then that’s what was off! Simply switch back to the hook required for the rest of the pattern and march along. If it doesn’t work, then I’d need a bit more info as to exactly what’s going off the rails for you. Perhaps your join is off and adding extra stitches where they aren’t supposed to be? Or perhaps you aren’t seeing where to add in those stitches, resulting in too many (or too few) and you’re ending up with something that flares out or pinches in?
Keep me posted and don’t give up! 🙂

Hi, thank you for your reply :o)
I did a magic circle and when I pulled the hole together it just closed the gap and didn’t bunch like the nipple. It’s my 1st ever crochet so I was expecting to find the magic circle bit difficult when I looked at some instructions!….. Anyway, I managed to gather some of the pink to make a nipple and it has worked 🙂

Hi, is there any way to knit this that you know of? I’m a knitter, not a crochet-er, and I would love to make one for my friend who is expecting and will be breastfeeding…

I’m really sorry that I can’t help you out. The only thing I know how to knit is your basic scarf–and even that is a struggle for me!! I’m positive there is a way to make this using a pair of knitting needles but you’d have to find someone that’s able to do both in order to translate it into knitting terms.

There is a cute Knitted baby hat pattern out there for a strawberry hat – it has a red body and a green “stem” top. This could be made in “boob colors” and should work nicely!

What size is it? My baby has a fairly big head lol

This one will fit a newborn up to 3 months. If you wanted to make it larger you can cheat it by upping the hook size and/or doubling your yarn!
I get a lot of people asking me to size this one up. I’ll work on it!

Thank you so much! I lost one/ got swollen so I’m needing to make one after spending $14 on the first one I thought I would try to tackle it! Thanks for posting the pattern! He’s got a 19″ head how much bigger do you think I should go?

The original finished hat only measures 14″ in diameter so upping the hook might not so it for you if you need it in a 19″ size. Let me tackle it and see what I can come up for you! I’ll need about an hour or so to puzzle it out!

Awesome! I’ve been looking for a patter for one of these for ages! 🙂 My baby is due in June and I really want to make one of these! Can I just check though, are you using US terminology for stitches etc? Also, up to what age baby do you think this hat would fit?

Congratulations on your new bundle!! All of the terms in this pattern (and all my others) are done with US terminology. Thanks for asking!
This cute little beanie hat will fit a newborn: 0-3 months. I haven’t done anything larger with it yet. Hope that helps!

I use regular Red Heart Super Saver with practically everything I make. It’s inexpensive and relatively simple for everyone to get.
