Pro-Breastfeeding Infant Hat

The Boob Hat has been making the rounds–blazing a trail all through fb and pinterest. So naturally, I’ve been asked several times to tackle it–and I have. I present you with my version of The Boob Hat!

The pattern is pretty straight forward. You need some skin toned yarn and–well, nipple colored yarn….   Those of us with breasts already know that these shades can range through lots of tones, so really any combo will work.

I’ve used for the main part of the hat an eggshell color and for the nipple, baby pink.

Pro Breastfeeding Crochet Hat: Using size I (5.50 mm) crochet hook and your chosen ‘nipple’ colored yarn: Begin with a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (beginning chs count as a st here and throughout pattern), 7 hdc in ring, join with a slip stitch in the top of the ch 2. (8 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join with a slip stitch in the top of the ch 2. (8 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, 2 dc in each hdc around, join with a slip stitch in the top of the chain 3. (16 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, 1 dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, change color to ‘flesh’ colored yarn in last dc worked, join with a slip stitch in the top of the chain 3. (24 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, (crochet over your tails to make weaving simple later), 1 dc in same space as join, *(1 dc in next dc) 2 times, 2 dc in next dc, continue from * around, 1 dc in each of the last 2 dc, join with a slip stitch in top of chain 3. (32 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, *(1 dc in next dc) 3 times, 2 dc in next dc, continue from * around, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc, join with a slip stitch in top of chain 3. (40 dc) For size x-small skip to rnd 10. For all other sizes continue with rnd 7.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, *(1 dc in next dc) 4 times, 2 dc in next dc, continue from * around, 1 dc in each of the last 4 dc, join with a slip stitch in top of chain 3. (48 dc) For size small skip to rnd 10. For all other sizes continue with rnd 8.

Rnd 8: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, *(1 dc in next dc) 5 times, 2 dc in next dc, continue from * around, 1 dc in each of the last 5 dc, join with a slip stitch in top of chain 3. (56 dc) For size medium skip to rnd 10. For size large, continue with remaining pattern.

Rnd 9: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as join, *(1 dc in next dc) 6 times, 2 dc in next dc, continue from * around, 1 dc in each of the last 6 dc, join with a slip stitch in top of chain 3. (64 dc)

Rnd 10: Ch 3, 1 dc in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch in the top of the ch 3. (40, 48, 56, 64 dc)

Repeat rnd 10 to reach the desired length:

• Size x-small and small: 5.5 – 6.5 inches from top of hat to brim.
• Size medium: 7.5 inches from top of hat to brim.
• Size large: 8 inches from top of hat to brim.

Note: Length can be adjusted for better fit. Finish off and weave in ends.
