I recently ran across this super cute hat pattern on Ravelry by an amazing crochet artist named Kristy Ashmore. It’s the Diamond Ridges hat and even though the free pattern has a picture tutorial for the first seven rounds–it’s a BEAST to figure out. So, after I finished it, I decided there had to be a simpler way to make the same pattern. After a lot of trial and error, I figured it out.
I’m positive I’m not the only one who has tackled this pattern and sort of altered it for the rest of us crocheters to make it simpler but I’ve searched through youtube and could only find ONE video on only the 5th round… That’s it. I’ve also done a ton of searching through the internet to see if anyone else had ever made a picture tutorial or tried explaining that pattern in a simpler way and nothing.
So, I am offering what I’ve figured out for anyone else interested in tackling a hat!

My intention was to make something simple to follow and hopefully to help out someone who really wants to make this hat but can’t get the original pattern.

Oh, by the way–if picture tutorials aren’t your thing, I’ve also done a video tutorial as I was snapping pics of the yellow hat in the above pics. I will not be reviewing basic crochet stitches like the double crochet or the front post double crochet and I go along at a pretty quick rate–the video isn’t for the absolute beginner.
I also begin with a magic ring, so if you aren’t sure how to work one I would recommend finding a youtube video that will walk you through it. There are a TON of them, (I highly recommend checking out Crochet Geek!)

I have a love/hate relationship with patterns. I go in thinking “this is going to be easy, its all there!” But soon drop out and make it up as I go along …..happened with this one too! Totally didn’t see the update til now, a week later. lol. What I ended up changing was the stitch count (I rarely count) and on the DC rows I changed it to:
CH 2, DC 4, DCTOG repeat.
And adjusted the clusters based on that.
The hat just wasnt curling, it was so super flat and after days and days of getting frustrated I just did what felt good. Ha!
I’ll be turning this into a pineapple hat for a coworker. I’ll definitely add pics in ravelry when I’m done! Thanks for teaching me a new stitch!

I am not a beginner, but after watching ALL the videos and the above instructions, and starting and restarting so many times, I have finally thrown in the towel. I love this hat, but I just can’t get it. 😫😫

Sorry Ellie. Sometimes it just happens that way and you get so frustrated that you just want to throw your yarn!! Take a break, crochet something else, and maybe revisit it later and maybe it’ll click for you!

How do you print the diamond hat off I have try four time and it will not print the pattern off;(
I make baby hat for the hospital and was going to try this hat for the hospital;)

Hi my name is sandra .i am having a difficult time with the hat curling.I dont know what i am doing wrong. I am following your tutorial plus the instructions all i am getting is a flat doily .Do you have any ideas why it is not curling.I uaed worsted weight yarn and am using a 4.5 mm hook.Please help i really like this pattern

The hat will remain relatively flat until you stop increasing and then it will dramatically pull up and into a recognizable hat shape 🙂 Don’t give up!!

How long does it take before the hat starts to get smaller once you begin making the diamonds? Mine is still fairly flat…

It will stay completely flat for you until you complete all of your increase rounds. After those rounds are complete, the hat will begin to rapidly take shape.

I have made 6 of these hats recently. I tore the 1st one apart several times trying to figure out the pattern. Then I watched the video and now all I need is the pattern! Thanks for a great tutorial! I would love to post pictures but wasn’t sure how.

I had the perfect wool for my daughter’s winter hat (coming up soon in Australia) and now I have the perfect pattern.

Of course I’ll reply! 🙂 I used medium worsted weight yarn (think Red Heart Super Saver) for this hat. You can use any medium worsted and get similar results. Best of luck with it and I hope you will share your pics over in fb when you are all done!

When I seen this hat I
Knew I wanted to try it.I love the design .The first part of the hat was very simple but when it came. To row 10 it was a little confussing.after a few tries I got it. IT WAS NOT YOUR PATTERN IT WAS ME READING IT AND LOOKING AT THE PIC JUST DIDNT LOOK LIKE YOURS.Now that my hat is almost done how do I send a pic to let you see what you have taught to me? I will be making more hats like this.Thank you for sharing this titoral.

I love your design! I was wondering..is it possible to keep the front post double crochet stitch for the remainder of the hat? I want to make one without the diamond pattern on the bottom. Thank you!

You could absolutely continue just fpdc around the hat! It would make a beautiful finished design 🙂

I came across your pattern looking for something new to make for my daughter. I really like how it came out. I changed it a little bit at the bottom/end going with a plain dc row followed by a sc row and then sl st-ing around the edge as well with a few well placed decreases here and there but not many. We threw a bow in for fun.
I used a couple of different colors so it has a striped looked.
I could email you a picture if you like…it really came out great. Otherwise I don’t really know how to get it on the site here.

I LOVE this hat! I was searching for patterns that were cute but a little different. Our local crochet club is doing a “hats for local kids” project through this month and we are trying to do as many as possible. This hat worked up beautifully! My only problem was the increases in rows 6 and 7. I couldn’t figure that out though i’ve crocheted for many years lol. I worked them as a “dc increase in next dc” so it worked out great. It came out very pretty in a pale turquoise. I would post a picture but i’m much better with a crochet hook than a computer :-). Thank you so much for re-working this pattern!

Hi, thanks for sharing your project with me. I am left-handed so did not get the luxury of watching the videos!! I made the hat and I love love love it…. I was just testing the pattern to see if I could do it since I am self taught and still fairly new to crocheting…It turned out beautiful… thank you again!!
